Kris has been in the pub industry for all of his working life, graduating from Bournemouth University in 1988, he joined Bass PLC where he worked in a wide variety of roles including training officer, auditor, stocktaker and finally as the operations manager of their central Birmingham managed pub business, which was the second highest turnover area within their estate.
In 1995 Kris joined Scottish and Newcastle Retail, where for two years he operated a branded area of pubs along the M4 corridor and central Bristol. In 1997 following a number of very successful developments, Kris was asked to join the export division of S&N’s beer business to head up the creation of a retail operations business in foreign markets. Within two years a variety of JV and franchise operations were established throughout Europe, Asia and Africa through the rollout of the Cafe Oz and Highland Pub Company Concepts.
In 1999 Kris followed his old boss into Greene King Plc as the operations director for their tenanted pubs in the South of England, in that time as many as 650 sites were overseen within his division, by an operations team of 20. After 5 successful years which saw 3 Publican Awards achieved for best tenanted pub company, and 5 very large trade acquisitions including Old English Inns and Morland’s of Abingdon, Kris transferred to the managed division to head up their Southern neighbourhood pub estate. At this point the company was to embark on its largest acquisition of 400 ex Whitbread pubs from the Laurel group resulting in Kris operating a group of 192 managed pubs delivering £112m per year of turnover, and £27m of operating profit.
Kris left GK in March 2007 after 8 successful years with Greene King, to build his own enterprise and also to spend more time at home during the arrival of baby Lois in April 2007. During this period Kris created Eclipse Business and Management Services Ltd, he helped launched two EIS companies with Close Investments, became a non-exec director of Country Food and Dining ltd and a large privately owned Southern Restaurant Group, as well as consulting for Capital Pub Company, Zizzi and ASK restaurants, Eat Your Heart Out Ltd, Alan Yau, and for the administrators of the Smollenskys Bar and Grill restaurants.
In August 2008 Eclipse took over the management of Capital Pub Company 2, changing its name to Convivial London Pubs. Kris restructured the board, halved the head office costs, outsourced all but the operational team and proceeded to manage the business from considerable losses and breached bank covenants to deliver £434k of PBT and a 200% operating profit uplift by the year end in 2009. The business moved from strength to strength and in 2012 the company achieved a profit before tax of £1m. In late 2013, Kris led the successful sale of the company’s assets and in so doing trebled the value of the assets for the shareholders, under his management and control.
In 2012 Kris, with a former colleague and long term friend Simon Bunn, established Brewhouse and Kitchen ltd, since the creation of the company he has raised over £30m, trading commenced in 2013, after which the company has been rapidly built into a 22 pub business and is the largest Brew Pub Operator in the UK. In March 2018, the Company won Best Pub Company and Best Employer at the annual industry awards, an August the Company was awarded two World Beer Awards.
Kris lives in Bournemouth and London with his wife Fran and their daughter Lois. He is a fellow of the British Institute of Innkeeping , and also a fellow of Bournemouth University, where he is a frequent guest lecturer.
